Assigning and reassigning tasks

2 min read

Every task in Workly can be assigned to a team member who is responsible for completing it. Clear task ownership ensures nothing falls through the cracks.

Assign a task

  1. Click the assignee field on any task
  2. Search for and select a project member
  3. The task is now assigned to that person

Assigned tasks appear in the assignee’s My Tasks dashboard card, making it easy for them to see their responsibilities.

Reassign a task

Click the current assignee to change them. Select a different team member, and the task transfers to the new owner. The previous assignee is notified of the change.

Unassign a task

Clear the assignee field to make a task unassigned. Unassigned tasks show in the Workload view and can be filtered in the task list.

Assign from multiple views

  • List view — Click the assignee column on any row
  • Kanban view — Click the assignee avatar on the card
  • Task detail — Use the assignee dropdown in the detail panel
  • Calendar view — Open a task and change the assignee

People custom field

Beyond the main assignee, you can create People custom fields to track additional roles. For example, add a “Reviewer” or “QA Lead” field to assign secondary responsibilities on tasks.

Assignee edit permissions

Project admins can control whether all members can edit assignees or only admins. Toggle this in the project settings.
