Direct messages and group conversations

2 min read

Workly supports both direct messages (DMs) for private one-on-one conversations and group chats for team discussions.

Start a direct message

  1. Click the + icon in the chat sidebar
  2. Select New Message
  3. Search for and select a workspace member
  4. Start typing your message

Direct messages are private between you and the other person. No one else can see them.

Create a group conversation

  1. Click the + icon in the chat sidebar
  2. Select New Group
  3. Add multiple members
  4. Give the group a name
  5. Click Create

Group conversations are perfect for project discussions, team updates, or any topic that involves more than two people.

Minimised chats

Workly supports minimised chat windows — small floating chat bubbles that let you continue conversations while working on other things. Click a minimised chat to expand it, or close it to dismiss.

Quick message

Use the Quick Message feature to send a message to anyone without navigating away from your current page. This is accessible from the header or via a shortcut.

Chat features in DMs and groups

All chat features work in both DMs and group conversations:

  • Text messages with Markdown formatting
  • File and image attachments
  • Voice messages
  • Emoji reactions
  • Message editing and deletion
  • Forwarding messages
  • Pinning important messages
  • Link previews
  • Read receipts and typing indicators
