Drag and drop tasks within and across sections

4 min read

Workly supports full drag-and-drop for organising tasks — move tasks within the same section, between different sections, and even reorder entire sections.

Drag within the same section

To reorder tasks inside a section:

  1. Hover over a task row to see the drag handle
  2. Click and hold the task
  3. Drag it up or down within the section
  4. Drop it at the desired position

The task snaps into its new position immediately. Other tasks shift to make room.

Drag across sections

To move a task to a different section:

  1. Pick up a task by clicking and holding
  2. Drag it to a different section
  3. Drop it on a specific task to insert above or below
  4. Or drop it on the section header to add at the beginning
  5. Or drop it on an empty section to add as the first task

When moving across sections, the task’s section assignment updates automatically.

Drop zones

  • Above a task — Drop above the target row’s centre
  • Below a task — Drop below the target row’s centre
  • On a collapsed section — Task goes to the beginning of that section
  • On an empty section — Task becomes the first item
  • On the “Add task” row — Task goes to the end of the section

Reorder sections

You can also drag entire sections to rearrange them:

  1. Click and hold the section header
  2. Drag the section up or down
  3. Drop it at the desired position

Visual feedback

While dragging, the picked-up task becomes semi-transparent and the target location is highlighted, so you always know exactly where the task will land.

Permissions

You can drag tasks if you created them, they’re assigned to you, or you’re a project admin. Subtasks and grouped views don’t support drag-and-drop.
